{"id":34996,"date":"2026-05-04T15:35:00","date_gmt":"2026-05-04T13:35:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/helsinkiespana.org\/?p=34996"},"modified":"2026-05-04T16:16:15","modified_gmt":"2026-05-04T14:16:15","slug":"from-the-classroom-to-europe-spanish-youth-step-into-the-heart-of-global-security","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/helsinkiespana.org\/en\/from-the-classroom-to-europe-spanish-youth-step-into-the-heart-of-global-security\/","title":{"rendered":"From the classroom to Europe: Spanish youth step into the heart of global security"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Following the success of the \u201cYouth and Global Security\u201d lecture series, promoted by Helsinki Espa\u00f1a with the support of the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.exteriores.gob.es\/es\/Paginas\/index.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation<\/a><\/strong>, the commitment of participating students has gone a step further.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Held between February and March 2026, these sessions took place across five universities in Span, Nebrija University, University of Valencia, Autonomous University of Barcelona, Atlantic University of the Middle, and University of Deusto, bringing together around 250 students. During the sessions, participants had the opportunity to engage with high-level experts, bringing together academia, the military, and diplomacy. They were able to exchange views with figures Colonel Jos\u00e9 Luis Calvo Albero, Major General Ricardo Esteban, and Sergeant Christian Ric\u00f3s Sevilla, an expert in terrorism, all of whom contributed to a deeper understanding of the <strong>current challenges in international security<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As a final highlight, those who stood out for their participation, through the creation of a reel on the role of Europe in global security, were selected to take part in a unique experience in Brussels, the political heart of Europe, this past April.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/helsinkiespana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Foto-interior-Noticia-Web.-De-las-aulas-a-Europa-2-Helsinki-Espana.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34990\" srcset=\"https:\/\/helsinkiespana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Foto-interior-Noticia-Web.-De-las-aulas-a-Europa-2-Helsinki-Espana.jpg 640w, https:\/\/helsinkiespana.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Foto-interior-Noticia-Web.-De-las-aulas-a-Europa-2-Helsinki-Espana-480x360.jpg 480w\" sizes=\"(min-width: 0px) and (max-width: 480px) 480px, (min-width: 481px) 640px, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Inmersion in international institutions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trip allowed this group to gain first-hand insight into the main institutions and geopolitical dynamics of the continent. One of the key moments was the visit to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nato.int\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NATO<\/a><\/strong>, where they held a meeting with Adela D\u00edaz Bern\u00e1rdez, Deputy Permanent Representative of Spain to the North Atlantic Council, and Jorge Lens Blanco, Deputy Defence Counsellor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In a confidential setting, the discussion addressed essential issues such as NATO\u2019s current role, Spain\u2019s involvement in the organisation, and the main challenges of global security in an increasingly complex international context. The session provided a realistic and strategic perspective that is difficult to access from an academic environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another key meeting took place at the <strong>Permanent Representation of Spain to the European Union.<\/strong> There, the group met with Nu\u00f1o Santos, Counsellor at the Office of the Permanent Representative of Spain to the EU. Nu\u00f1o shared his perspective in an open and approachable manner on European security and defence policy, as well as the geopolitical constraints and challenges currently facing the European Union.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Beyond politics: a cultural experience<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trip was not limited to institutional engagement. It also allowed the group to discover the cultural richness of Brussels, exploring its history, diversity, and gastronomy, all of which form part of the broader context in which European political decisions are made.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Youth engaged in the global future<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This initiative reflects Helsinki Espa\u00f1a\u2019s strong commitment to fostering a critical, informed, and active youth in international affairs.
