Seminar “Organized Crime and Terrorism: Public Policies and Practices to Combat and Prevent It”

This seminar, delivered by Professor Edgardo Buscaglia, aims to introduce students to different approaches of public policies designed to combat and prevent organized crime and terrorism.

The seminar will focus on topics such as:

• terrorism prevention,
• the foundations of organized crime,
• strategies to prevent terrorism and organized crime,
• human security,
• transnational crime.

About the lecturer

Edgardo Buscaglia is a lecturer in the REACT course of Helsinki España. He is currently a Senior Scholar in Law and Economics at Columbia University (New York, USA), a Visiting Senior Academic at the Università degli Studi di Torino (Turin, Italy), a Visiting Professor at the Universidad Nacional de Buenos Aires (Argentina), and the President of the Instituto de Acción Ciudadana (Mexico City, Mexico).

Since 1991, he has provided public policy advice to public and private sectors in 118 countries, focusing on counteracting and preventing complex transnational economic crimes linked to political and private sector corruption, in countries such as Afghanistan, Colombia, El Salvador, Guatemala, India, Indonesia, Iran, Jordan, Lebanon, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, Ukraine, and Yemen.

His findings have been published in leading outlets such as The Wall Street Journal, Washington Times, New York Times, and Financial Times. He has also authored over one hundred peer-reviewed scientific articles and seven books.

In 1995, he co-founded the Latin American Law and Economics Association and served on the Board of Governance of Transparency International (Berlin, 1995-1999). Professor Buscaglia received his postdoctoral legal training at the Jurisprudence and Social Policy Programat the University of California, Berkeley. He also holds a Master’s degree in Law and Economics and a PhD in Law and Economics from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
