Security and Self-Protection in Healthcare Environments Course

Curso de Seguridad y Autoprotección en Entornos Sanitarios. Helsinki España

General Information

Healthcare and care professionals work in particularly sensitive environments, where they interact on a daily basis with people who may be experiencing pain, uncertainty, stress, vulnerability, or heightened emotional distress. In certain contexts, these circumstances may lead to situations involving tension, conflict, threats, or violence, affecting professionals, patients, and the functioning of healthcare facilities.

The Security and Self-Protection in Healthcare Environments Course is a specialized training programme designed to provide healthcare and care professionals with the knowledge, tools, and practical skills needed to identify, prevent, and manage risk situations arising in the course of their professional activities.

The training addresses security from an integrated perspective, combining risk prevention, conflict management, response to assaults, management of violent incidents, security within facilities, evacuation, and stress management, among other areas.

Through a highly practical methodology, participants develop their skills through exercises, role-playing, and scenario-based simulations, adapted to the characteristics of healthcare environments and the situations they may encounter in their professional activities.

The programme is designed to strengthen not only individual security, but also collective and organizational response capabilities. A safe healthcare organization depends not only on protocols and protective measures, but also on professionals who are able to identify warning signs, prevent risk situations, manage conflicts, and act in a coordinated manner when a situation becomes critical.

For this reason, the course contributes to the development of a safety culture, integrating prevention and self-protection into the everyday practices of professionals and strengthening the ability of healthcare facilities to respond to unexpected situations in a safe, coordinated, and effective manner.

Why a Security and Self-Protection Course for Healthcare Environments?

Healthcare and care professionals work every day in environments where situations involving tension, aggression, or violence may arise, often unexpectedly and in highly emotionally charged contexts.

Having professionals who are prepared to identify warning signs, prevent and manage conflicts, and respond appropriately to physical assaults or other risk situations contributes to protecting staff, patients, and the organization as a whole.

At the same time, having the tools to manage situations involving tension and pressure can help reduce emotional strain, support professional wellbeing, and prevent factors associated with stress and burnout.

Practical training helps transform protocols into real-world response capabilities, strengthening both incident prevention and the ability to respond effectively to critical situations, while fostering a genuine safety culture within healthcare facilities.

Because caring for those who care is also part of security.

Training Team

Security training for healthcare environments requires a multidisciplinary approach that addresses both physical and operational risks and the communication, behavioural, and emotional factors involved in high-tension situations.

The instructor team brings together professionals from law enforcement, specialists in psychology and trauma management, and experts in communication and non-verbal behaviour, with experience in a range of civilian and operational contexts.

The team also has extensive experience in practical training and skills development, essential for translating specialist knowledge into clear, practical tools that can be applied in the participants’ professional environment.

A team that does not simply explain what to do, but trains professionals to recognize risks, prevent conflict situations, and know how to act when circumstances require it.

Methodology

The course is based on a practical, dynamic approach focused on real-life situations in healthcare environments. Each module begins with the knowledge and guidance required to understand potential risks and establish appropriate response criteria.

Learning is then put into practice through exercises, role-playing, and scenario-based simulations, in which participants identify warning signs, manage high-tension situations, make decisions, and apply the tools and skills acquired.

Scenarios are adapted to the characteristics and needs of each organization, taking into account the type of facility, professional profiles, and the risk situations to which their teams may be exposed.

The training aims to ensure that responses do not remain theoretical. Practising how to communicate, prevent escalation, respond to an assault, or act during a critical situation helps participants develop skills that can prove decisive when a real situation requires it.

In this way, the training contributes not only to improving individual response capabilities, but also to strengthening a safety culture within the organization, based on prevention, coordination, and preparedness.

Because knowing what to do is important. Having practised it beforehand, even more so.

Experience

Helsinki España’s security training builds on more than two decades of experience preparing professionals who work in high-risk and demanding environments.

Since 2003, Helsinki Spain has delivered the HEAT (Hostile Environment Awareness Training) course, a specialized programme for professionals who travel to or work in conflict zones, war zones, or environments with high levels of insecurity. Through more than 30 editions, the programme has trained over 700 participants in risk prevention, self-protection, and response to risk situations.

This experience has enabled us to develop a methodology based on practical learning, scenario-based training, and lessons learned from professionals with operational experience.

The Security and Self-Protection in Healthcare Environments course builds on this experience and adapts it to the specific characteristics and needs of the healthcare and care sector, where professionals may encounter situations involving tension, aggression, violence, and other critical incidents in the course of their work.

The programme provides doctors, nurses, healthcare assistants, psychologists, social workers, and other healthcare and care professionals with tools to prevent risks, protect themselves, and respond appropriately to unexpected situations, while also contributing to strengthening a safety culture within their organizations.

More than 20 years of experience preparing professionals to face risk situations. A proven methodology adapted to the security challenges of healthcare environments.
