Training on Personal Safety and Self-Protection

CURSO SEGURIDAD Y AUTOPROTECCIÓN EN ZONAS DE RIESGO

General Information

The Personal Safety and Self-Protection course is an intensive three-day programme designed for people who want to feel safer, build confidence and develop the ability to respond effectively to potentially risky situations in their everyday lives.

It is aimed at people who travel frequently, work or carry out professional activities in places where crime or violence may pose a threat, as well as those who may feel particularly vulnerable due to their personal or professional circumstances: young people travelling the world, business owners and professionals who may be exposed to security risks, women looking to strengthen their personal safety, or anyone who wants to be better prepared.

Through practical and realistic training, participants will learn to identify risks, prevent potentially dangerous situations, make decisions under pressure and respond appropriately to incidents.

Because personal safety is not about living in fear. It is about knowing how to recognise risks, anticipate them and having the tools to act when it matters most.

Why Take a Self-Protection Course?

Personal safety is no longer a concern exclusively associated with people working in conflict zones. Violence, crime and the risks associated with travelling and moving through unfamiliar environments are part of the reality faced by many people, both at home and abroad.

  • More than 1 in 3 people worldwide have experienced some form of physical or sexual violence during their lifetime.
  • Every year, millions of people travel, work or temporarily live outside their usual environment, encountering unfamiliar social, cultural and security contexts.
  • Perceptions of insecurity are also increasing: feeling vulnerable can influence how we travel, where we go and how we respond to certain situations.

And yet, how many people receive practical training on how to prevent a risky situation or how to react when one occurs?

Self-protection is about being prepared. Knowing how to identify a threat, avoid a dangerous situation, make decisions under pressure and respond appropriately can make all the difference.

Because the best response to a risky situation starts long before it happens.

What Will You Learn?

This course combines risk prevention, personal safety, self-defence, emergency response and digital security awareness. The aim is not only to help participants recognise potentially dangerous situations, but also to provide them with practical tools to avoid, manage and safely get out of them.

  • Identify and anticipate risks: Learn to recognise warning signs, assess potentially dangerous situations and make informed decisions to prevent or reduce risks before they become a threat.
  • Self-defence and response to aggression: Develop practical techniques to respond to physical assaults, fights and violent situations, including specific techniques to break free and get to safety in the event of a sexual assault.
  • Act under pressure: Train your decision-making and response skills in unexpected situations, learning to remain in control and act quickly and effectively when every second counts.
  • Evacuation, escape and getting to safety: Learn strategies to leave a dangerous situation and reach a safe place, adapting your response to the environment and circumstances.
  • First aid and pre-hospital response: Gain the knowledge and skills needed to respond to an emergency and provide appropriate initial assistance until emergency medical services arrive.
  • Personal security in the digital age: Understand the risks associated with social media and digital devices, learn how to manage your digital footprint and online exposure, and discover ways to protect your personal information and reduce your vulnerability.
  • Stress management and emotional wellbeing: Develop strategies to manage fear, anxiety and stress before, during and after a risky situation, helping you respond more calmly and effectively.
  • Confidence and ability to respond: Build the confidence to recognise a threat, make decisions and take action, reducing the risk of freezing and strengthening your ability to protect yourself and those around you.

How We Do It

The course lasts three days and is designed around a learning-by-doing approach.

Each module begins with the theoretical knowledge and practical guidelines needed to understand risks and know how to respond. From there, learning moves into practice through techniques, exercises, role-playing and scenario-based simulations, where participants put what they have learned into practice and make decisions under pressure.

The aim is to ensure that responses do not remain purely theoretical. Practising how to react, facing unexpected scenarios and learning to remain in control helps participants develop skills that can prove decisive when a real situation requires action.

Exercises are adapted to participants’ level and carried out in a safe and controlled environment, with the support of civilian and military security professionals, first-aid specialists, and experts in psychology and trauma management.

Knowing what to do matters. Having practised it beforehand matters even more.

Training Team

Self-protection training requires much more than simply knowing security techniques. That is why the course is delivered by a multidisciplinary team of professionals specialising in security, emergency response, healthcare and the psychological management of high-risk situations.

Our instructors include professionals from law enforcement, healthcare and psychology and trauma management, with experience across a range of civilian and operational contexts.

This combination of expertise allows personal safety to be approached from a comprehensive perspective: preventing a threat, responding to an assault, providing emergency assistance, managing stress and making sound decisions under pressure.

Professional experience is complemented by strong teaching expertise, which is essential for turning specialist knowledge into practical, accessible training that can be applied to real-life situations.

The result is a team that does not simply explain what to do, but trains participants to know how to act when it matters most.

Experience

Helsinki España’s security training is built on more than two decades of experience preparing professionals to operate safely in challenging and high-risk environments.

Since 2003, Helsinki España has delivered HEAT (Hostile Environment Awareness Training), a specialised programme designed for professionals who travel to or work in conflict zones, war zones and environments with high levels of insecurity. Over more than 30 editions, the programme has trained more than 700 participants in risk prevention, self-protection and response to potentially dangerous situations.

This experience has enabled Helsinki España to develop a training methodology based on practical learning, scenario-based simulations and lessons learned from professionals with operational experience.

The Personal Safety and Self-Protection course builds on this expertise while addressing a different reality: you do not have to work in a conflict zone to encounter a potentially dangerous situation.

This programme brings practical personal safety knowledge and tools to travellers, young people, professionals, business owners and anyone who wants to strengthen their ability to prevent risks, protect themselves and respond effectively to unexpected situations in everyday life.

More than 20 years preparing people to face risk. Now bringing that experience within everyone’s reach.

Participants’ Testimonials

Sheylan Picon

Venezuela

Between hiding, punches, running, breaking free from restraints, and kidnapping simulations… I experienced this course to the fullest alongside my fellow human rights defenders from many parts of Latin America. For a moment, I thought that attending a master’s programme far from home was enough to step out of my comfort zone. Suddenly, I found myself in this retreat, which left me eager to continue learning in the fields of self-defence and first aid. I returned with a much stronger and renewed perspective on life and on humanitarian work. Thank you for the experience.

Nohelia Rivas

Ecuador

Participating in the Security and Self-Protection course was a great opportunity to acquire theoretical, but above all practical tools that I will be able to apply in my work defending human rights in Latin America. I believe it is very important to have a space beforehand to discuss how to manage our feelings and reactions in critical situations in an effective and conscious way, in order to minimize their impact.

Jovanna García

Guatemala

This course allowed me to understand the critical importance of self-defense training and risk management. As a journalist, I have faced dangerous situations without the necessary tools to react; now, I feel equipped not only to defend myself, but especially to prevent physical attacks. Thanks to the combination of theory and practice taught by professionals, this reinforces that physical safety is the foundation of our overall well-being. I would also like to highlight the extra benefit of having learned specialized first aid techniques.
