What is HEAT?

The HEAT training is an intensive five-day program designed to prepare professionals deploying to high-risk environments or conflict zones. This training develops automatic response skills in critical situations, situational and personal security awareness, as well as emotional and risk management in real-world scenarios that test resilience, judgment, and teamwork. Participants gain practical tools to make quick and safe decisions, protect themselves and their colleagues, and operate effectively under pressure in international missions within hostile environments.

Background

HEAT (Hostile Environment Awareness Training) was developed in the 1990s by international humanitarian organizations and security consultancies for civilian and humanitarian personnel deploying to high-risk environments, particularly in conflict or unstable areas.

Since 2003, Helsinki España has been delivering this training through the IUCPM, and over more than 20 years of experience, has trained over 600 professionals.

The HEAT course is integrated into our REACT program (Rapid Expert Assistance and Cooperation Teams for Conflict Prevention, Crisis Management, and Post-Conflict Rehabilitation) as safety training for work in Peacekeeping Missions, although we also offer independent editions for those who need the training on its own.

While not all organizations formally require HEAT, it is highly recommended for anyone working in field operations in conflict or high-risk zones. For agencies such as the UN, OCHA, Médecins Sans Frontières, UNHCR, and the International Red Cross, HEAT or equivalent training is often a prerequisite for deployment in high-risk missions.

Although technicians, aid workers, journalists, correspondents, or diplomats could technically deploy without this training, doing so without HEAT is strongly discouraged for their own safety and may limit access to certain field assignments.

Course Objectives

The HEAT course is designed to prepare professionals working in international development, humanitarian assistance, human rights, journalism, and other sectors operating in complex environments to work more safely, effectively, and resiliently in high-risk settings.

Upon successful completion of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Apply practical safety, survival, and emergency response skills through realistic exercises and simulations based on situations commonly encountered in the field.
  • Develop practical habits and tools to protect both themselves and their team while maintaining the ability to operate effectively under pressure and uncertainty.
  • Identify threats, assess risks, and implement appropriate preventive measures before, during, and after deployment in insecure or unstable environments.
  • Respond effectively to critical incidents such as armed attacks, kidnappings, civil unrest, emergency evacuations, accidents, and medical emergencies.
  • Strengthen personal resilience and decision-making skills in situations involving stress, uncertainty, and operational pressure.
  • Improve communication and coordination during crises, working effectively with national and international teams as well as other actors operating in the field.
  • Increase the confidence, preparedness, and adaptability required to carry out professional activities in high-risk environments.

Certification

Participants who successfully complete the training will receive a HEAT Certificate issued by the International University Centre for Peace Missions (IUCPM) of HELSINKI ESPAÑA.

This certificate confirms that the participant has successfully completed specialised training in safety and survival in hostile environments, acquiring practical knowledge and skills to prevent risks, respond to critical incidents, and operate safely in complex settings while protecting both themselves and their team.

HEAT is a widely recognised standard used by humanitarian organisations, international development agencies, international organisations, and other entities that deploy personnel to high-risk environments.

In the fields of international development and humanitarian assistance, security preparedness is not an added value: it is a professional necessity. Organisations have a duty of care towards their personnel and must ensure that those working in high-risk environments are equipped with the knowledge and skills needed to respond safely and effectively to critical situations. For this reason, an increasing number of international organisations, NGOs, and agencies deploying personnel to the field regard HEAT training as an essential preparation before taking on responsibilities in insecure or unstable environments. In many recruitment processes, holding a HEAT certificate can make the difference between a candidate who is prepared for field deployment and one who is not.

Beyond strengthening a professional profile, HEAT provides practical tools that can prove decisive for personal safety and effective response during crises and emergencies.

Participants are encouraged to renew their HEAT training every five years to ensure that their knowledge and skills remain current and aligned with the demands of increasingly complex and high-risk operating environments.

HEAT Alumni Testimonials

Guedany Figueiras

Mexico. Human Rights Defender

To defend human rights, preparation and prevention are key.

HEAT is essential training for strengthening our capacities in risk management, field security, and strategic intervention as humanitarian personnel.

Having access to tools of this caliber not only strengthens my professional profile, but also enables me to carry out human rights advocacy work in a safer, more responsible, and more effective way in the areas where it is most needed.

José Miguel Vera

Mexico. Photojournalist

An incredible, transformative experience, but above all, extremely useful for the challenges in our field. A privilege to share with such outstanding professionals in what they do.

Benjamin Hindrichs

Germany. Journalist

In times of increasing hostility towards and violence against journalists, it’s crucial to be prepared and learn how to navigate high risk environments, whether at home or abroad. As someone who covers far right extremism and frequently works on cross-border investigations into human rights violations, migration or militarized conservation, Helsinki España’s HEAT course has been extraordinarily useful for me, equipping me with the practical and theoretical tools that every journalist – whether freelance or staff – should have when working in challenging environments.

Guadalupe Orjuela

Colombia. Aid worker

Nothing fully prepares you for an emergency, or for conflict. But as civilians, HEAT is the closest thing to experiencing it without crossing that line. It trains you to think when everything is screaming, to care for others without putting yourself at risk, and to move strategically amidst uncertainty. It reminds us that, in volatile contexts, preparedness is not optional: it is the ethical and operational foundation for continuing to do our work without becoming part of the risk.

Stéphanie Bouriel

Austria. Emergency Coordinator

One of the most impactful aspects of this experience was the intentional effort to bring together people from diverse backgrounds, many of us coming from countries affected by different forms of violence. This diversity enriched our discussions and allowed for genuine, cross-cultural learning that extended beyond the classroom. I am especially grateful to the team for opening spaces for dialogue and shared learning, where our different realities, professional fields, and lived experiences became a powerful complement to one another. Through this approach, each participant was not only a learner but also a contributor, and the collective knowledge we built together reflected the richness of our unique perspectives.

Jiayue Qian

China. Student

I really appreciated the immersive and hands-on experience during the HEAT course. Everything felt incredibly real, and I gained valuable practical knowledge, especially as someone with no prior humanitarian field experience. After this training, I feel more prepared both mentally and technically, for real-life fieldwork.

I’ll carry the lessons and emotions from HEAT with me, and constantly reflect on safety protocols and stress management techniques when facing emergencies

Natalia Scopetta

Argentina. Aid worker

The HEAT training in Helsinki España was an exceptional experience – practical, intense, and deeply relevant to the realities we face in the field. It gave me concrete tools to navigate complex, high-risk contexts safely, and left me with a renewed sense of readiness to face challenging humanitarian settings.

I especially want to highlight the outstanding work of the trainers and the coordination team, whose professionalism and commitment made this a truly high-quality learning experience. I highly recommend it to anyone working in the humanitarian sector.

Sofía Herra Vargas

Costa Rica. Animalist

I can’t begin to describe how grateful I am for having taken part in the HEAT (Hostile Environment Awareness Training) program by Helsinki España.

It was an incredibly challenging week -both physically and mentally- but without a doubt, one of the most profoundly human experiences I’ve ever had.

Yoko Kojima

Japan. Student

HEAT by Helsinki España has given me one of the most valuable experiences in my learning journey of international development. It filled the gap I was feeling in my master’s degree in international development in the classroom by offering hands-on field training on hostile environment including how to deal with kidnapping, carjacking, sexual assault situations, and most importantly how to prevent ourselves from getting into such a hostile situation in the first place. The contents and exercises covered, and the field teachers were excellent. The highlight was the interactions we had with other participants from all around the world who are engaged in humanitarian work on the ground.

Juan Camilo Pinzón

Colombia. Analyst

HEAT is a hands-on training program which provided me with solid skills on how to work in real life situations while being deployed in the field. With the vast knowledge of the trainers, the activities helped me to undertake and perform professionally during hostile and risky situations. As the most comprehensive and challenging week of the course, it adds overall value to the REACT program.

Michael Minassie

Ethiopia. Journalist

The HEAT exercise has equipped me with skills to deal with extreme situations like kidnapping, ambush, fire, to mention but a few, which I may be exposed to in my work. Kudos to Helsinki España for organizing this course given by high profile thinkers and practitioners from various backgrounds and brought together trainees from many countries, thus enriching multiculturalism.
